A November 16 Sustainable Supper and a Natural Awakenings article
Starting November with Beautiful Sunsets
The first two sunsets of November were just gorgeous, but in very different ways. On Tuesday, the day’s fog and cloud cover gave way just enough to produce the top sunset. The second, on Wednesday, was a splash of pastels in a nearly cloudless sky.
Never gets old.
11/16 Sustainable Supper Focuses on Resilience

Green City Market will hold the latest in its Sustainable Supper Series on Wednesday, November 16. The event will be held at Dorothy’s Bistro (formerly known as Flat & Point), 3524 W. Fullerton Ave. in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood, and begins at 6 p.m.
Along with a delicious meal and drinks, there will be a discussion between Green City Market Executive Director Mandy Moody and Alex Finn, founder and owner of Finn’s Ranch (Buchanan, Michigan), which sells at Green City and several other regional markets. Finn will discuss how her sustainable livestock farm has weathered a fire earlier this year that destroyed much of its inventory and equipment, and how Green City raised financial support to help them in surviving the crisis.
Here is the press release with more details about the event.
_______________
November 2, 2022 (Chicago) — Green City Market (GCM), the nonprofit organization behind Chicago's premier sustainable farmers' market, is partnering with Dorothy’s Bistro to host an evening of local food, beverages, and conversation on Wednesday, November 16 at 6:00 p.m.
Dorothy’s Bistro, formerly Flat & Point, is a new concept for owners Brian and Taylor Bruns. Dorothy’s Bistro is located in Logan Square and features a small rotating menu full of alpine-inspired dishes. The menu for this Sustainable Supper will include three courses highlighting seasonal ingredients from Green City Market vendors and showcasing Chef Brian’s alpine-inspired technique.
The most recent installment of the Sustainable Supper Series took place earlier this month at Bungalow by Middle Brow, where panelists Peter Ternes, Middle Brow owner, and Marty Travis of Spence Farm discussed the importance of sustainable collaborations in farming, with a particular focus on the relationships between farmers and restaurants.
For the final installment of the 2022 Sustainable Supper Series, panelists will dive further into these relationships and look specifically at how our local food ecosystem works together in times of crisis.
"In a world where you can get anything, from anywhere, at any point; sometimes the quality of getting something local and made with love is overlooked,” said Taylor Bruns. “Having access to such great producers and farmers of produce, meats, and dairy helps to support the community that surrounds you. We are better and stronger when we work together.”
The panel discussion will be moderated by Mandy Moody, Executive Director of GCM. Joining Moody on the panel will be Alex Finn, owner of Finn’s Ranch, who will be discussing how their community came together in their recent time of crisis.
Tickets include a locally- and sustainably-sourced three-course meal with beverage pairings and a tip for service staff. Proceeds from this event series will support Green City Market's 501c3 nonprofit mission to support local, sustainable farmers, educate our community about where food comes from and why this knowledge matters, and expand food access in Chicago.
Tickets can be purchased via Tock at www.greencitymarket.org/sustainable-supper-series. GCM’s Sustainable Supper Series is generously sponsored by Tock.
Natural Awakenings’ Take on The Evolved Network
I’ve written quite a bit about The Evolved Network nonprofit organization over the past month. This round of coverage wraps up with an article I wrote for Natural Awakenings Chicago about Sebastian White, The Evolved Network’s founder and president, who is utilizing his skills as both a chef and clinical psychologist on a project to provide underprivileged Chicago youths with restaurant and urban gardening skills, counseling and therapeutic services, and education in management and finances.
This article delves more deeply into Sebastian’s life and career arc than my earlier articles. Click the button below to read the Natural Awakenings article, and click here, here and here for my other pieces about The Evolved Network.
