Veggie of the Day: Frillman Farms Beets
Early Bird Got The Berries
You have to get up very early in the morning to get to the market before I do, in the most literal sense. Desperately seeking strawberries, I was at Green City Market in Lincoln Park just before it opened at 7 a.m. Well, the good news is, you don’t have to: Strawberry season is in full swing. It’s short and sweet, though, so make sure you get out and capture the first juicy fruit of this growing season.
I slapped this together in hopes that some of you will see it before the markets close (most by 1 p.m.) and will dash out and do some local buying. Green City, Downtown Evanston Farmers Market, 61st Street Farmers Market and Oak Park Farmers Market are just a few of the markets open today and serving up beautiful, fresh, delicious, healthy and sustainably produced food.
Can’t make it today. Sunday features Logan Square Farmers Market, Wicker Park Farmers Market and other great venues. Check out the Weekend Market Schedule in yesterday’s Local Food Forum.
The photo immediately below is today’s market haul. So many great vendors, so I try to spread it around. There’s andouille sausage from Avrom Farm, lettuce from Froggy Meadow Farm, organic hothouse heirloom tomatoes from Iron Creek Farm, strawberries from Mick Klug Farm, asparagus from Ellis Family Farms, mushrooms from River Valley Ranch, pork steak from Jake’s Country Meats, and a Frillman Farms quartet of kale, hakurei turnips, those beets seen above and joi choi.
Happy foraging!
