Urgent Fundraising Alert: Chicken Farmer Has Lost Flock to Avian Flu
Help the Thomas Family of Matteson, Illinois Recover from This Setback
The existential threat that avian flu poses for poultry farmers and beyond has hit home in the Chicago region's small farm community and for my Local Food Forum publication.
I learned over the past weekend that Kakadoodle, located in Matteson in Chicago's South Suburbs, has lost its entire chicken flock to bird flu. It is a terrible blow for the owners, the Thomas family. Owner Marty Thomas is a friend and a subscriber to Local Food Forum.
They have launched a GoFundMe page, and please help if you can. Any size donation will help in their recovery.

Bob’s World, and Welcome to It
Chicago sunrise, January 20, 2025. Taking this opportunity to salute all of you who, through your work, your passion, your local food purchases, are helping build a healthier, more sustainable, more humane, and fairer food system.
At a time when so much is the world seems to be hurtling backwards or sideways, this movement has built tremendous momentum toward a better food system, undaunted by obstacles. Let’s keep on it and make this week the best that we can.
As Ted Lasso said, “Onward. Forward.”
