This week's Local Food Forum Chicago Region Farmers Market Tracker has cherries on top. Literally.
Take a look at what's new and what early season crops are still thriving (from my Saturday visit to Chicago's Green City Market) as we hit the home stretch to the start of summer this coming Friday.
Use the tracker to make your market plans, and please support our local farmers.
Farmers Market Reporter Visits Chicago's Edgewater Market
Sole Monday Market in Chicago Best Known for Its Lakeshore Skyline
To most Chicagoans, Edgewater is best known for the high-rise apartment buildings that literally sit at the edge of the waters of Lake Michigan. One of these buildings has a place in TV trivia.
Busy Andersonville makes up the western part of Edgewater. And there once was a hotel in Edgewater that was a popular beach resort — until a highway project separated it from the beach.
Local Food Forum’s Farmers Market Reporter Ed Kugler paid a visit to the farmers market in Edgewater, which holds the distinction of being the only such market in the city that is held on Mondays. This article contains his photo travelogue.
Bob’s World, and Welcome to It
On Thursday, a friend and I visited the bi-weekly Gathering at Tulip Tree Gardens in Beecher, Illinois (about 50 miles south of where I live in Chicago). Owners Rachael and Jesse Smedburg have emerged as leaders in the regenerative farming and local communities, and their Gatherings — which feature delicious meals, a pop-up farmers market, music and more — are definitely worth a drive in the countryside.
You can also commune with the farm animals. I did.
I’ll have a full story about the farm and the farmers later this week, but let’s start the week with some adorable baby animals.
Mother hen kept a close watch on her little ones. Rachael said the baby birds were probably about three days old.
I could now put “chick photographer” on my resume, but I fear it might be misinterpreted.
Saw Piglet. No signs of Pooh.
Excellent, thanks Bob!
