The Sword in the Watermelon
Now I'm just plain fruited. Plus this weekend's farmers market schedule
Legendary
I have renamed my chef’s knife Excalibur. Alas, extracting my sword from this 22-pound watermelon — which I received the other day from Three Sisters Garden in Kankakee — does not make me the rightful king of Chicago. But I am going to have a royal fruit feast over the next few days.
Along with the watermelon, I have the cut-up seven-pound cantaloupe I also got from Three Sisters, peaches, nectarines, pears, apricots, blueberries, cherries and apples. All local.
I like fruit.
So here’s what a 22-pound watermelon looks like cut up. Glad I had room in the fridge.
We’ve plunged in and eaten some, and it is just delicious.
By the way, the zipper bag in the back is full of watermelon rind. I have four of them. I may gin up the energy to make some watermelon rind pickles but if any of you can really use some, let me know.
I’ll share some ideas about how to use up mass quantities of watermelon soon. The weekend farmers market schedule follows. Get out there and I’m sure you’ll find a watermelon of your own, though one that is likely more portable.
