The Sioux Chef Honored with Julia Child Award
Plus, pix from a market in the 'burbs, and this week's farmers market schedule
Frankfort-itude
Since I can’t be everywhere, I’m always grateful when friends of Local Food Forum share photos of their favorite farmers market. Thanks to Marty Thomas — a subscriber and owner of Kakadoodle Farm in Frankfort — for sending these pics of Frankfort Country Market on Sunday (June 18).
Frankfort is located in Will County, about 35 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. The market is adjacent to the Frankfort Grainery Tower and Breidert Green, seen in the photo above.
Marty’s Kakadoodle Farm produces eggs from its pasture-raised chickens, and also aggregates products from a variety of farms that are dedicated to a better food system. According to their website, “Here at Kakadoodle we're all about making healthy, locally-produced food conveniently accessible to you and your family. By choosing Kakadoodle, you're not only taking a step towards a healthier lifestyle, but also supporting local farmers and contributing to a more sustainable food system.”
Thanks for the photos, Marty, we’re happy to have you as part of the Local Food Forum family,

Sean Sherman — Indigenous Food Advocate — to Receive Julia Child Award
Local Food Forum congratulates Chef Sean Sherman — the nation’s most prominent advocate for Indigenous food culture — as the recipient of this year’s 9th annual Julia Child Award. Sean, a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe, gained national recognition after the 2014 opening of his restaurant The Sioux Chef.
Sean will formally receive the award at a gala to be held October 24 in Minneapolis. The city is home to his Owamni, which received the 2022 James Beard Foundation Award for Best New Restaurant. In the photo above, Sean (on the right) listens as Owamni Co-Owner Dana Thompson makes her acceptance speech.
The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and Culinary Arts will provide a $50,000 grant to Sean’s non-profit organization, North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems (NATIFS), and will support its Indigenous Food Lab, a professional kitchen and training center, expanding access to Indigenous foods.
“Sean Sherman continues to dedicate his career to preserving Native American cuisine and creating a holistic, open-sourced system where others can expand on his work,” said Eric W. Spivey, Chairman of The Julia Child Foundation . “His unwavering commitment to Indigenous food systems has already reshaped the culinary landscape and played a pivotal role in fostering Native food sovereignty. Sean and Julia share a dedication to education and a commitment to inspire change.”
This Week’s Regional Farmers Market Schedule
There are just a handful of markets that have not yet started their outdoor seasons. Also, I’ve turned up a couple of markets that have been previously overlooked, so welcome to the list College of Lake County Farm Market (in Grayslake) and Tinley Park Farmers Market.
