Summer is Going Down Fighting
Autumn kicks in tomorrow afternoon. But while we’re past our region’s peak growing season, there were still some summer crops that were in plentiful supply — along with a handful of peaches with stern warnings that this is their last week — during my visit this morning to the SOAR Farmers Market in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood.
If you want to grab some before this summer stock goes poof, don’t sleep on it. A few cool nights (and they are in the forecast) may close the door til next summer. Scroll down for more of what’s still in season.
Green City Market’s Season Extension
Green City Market is extending the seasons for both of its outdoor markets. The flagship location in Lincoln Park will be open on Saturdays through November 20 — timely to stock up for your Thanksgiving feasts — and the West Loop satellite market will stay open through October 30. Green City’s Wednesday market in Lincoln Park runs through October 27.
It has not yet been officially decided whether Green City will hold a winter indoor market, but it is certain that the market will provide pickup and delivery options year-round through the Whatsgood e-commerce platform.
If you are engaged with or know of any other markets that are extending their outdoor seasons, or have announced plans for indoor seasons, please send that information to bob@localfoodforum.com.

Learn About The Soil-Food-Health Connection
One Week From Today: ReGenerate Illinois’ Free Webinar
A reminder that ReGenerate Illinois’ free webinar, Making the Regenerative Ag-Human Health Connection, is coming up one week from today (Tuesday, September 28), 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m central with an optional happy hour chat from 5:00-5:30.
Click below to register now, so you don’t miss this informative and engaging discussion on some of the most important issues in building a better food system.
If you’re a Local Food Forum reader, you probably have heard that regenerative farming practices build healthier soils. These soils produce healthier plants that turn into healthier food, while promoting environmental sustainability.
There are also medical and nutrition professionals who are working to persuade people to eat better, for general health and to prevent diet-related diseases.
And there’s a vibrant community of “farm to table” chefs, marketers and healthy food advocates working tirelessly to build a better food system.
What’s not as obvious is how these multi-faceted efforts are inter-related. And that is the topic of "Making the Regenerative Ag-Human Health Connection.” The guest speakers represent our farming, medical, nutrition, research, culinary and food education communities.
• Caitlin Arens, Partnership Manager, Pilot Light food education nonprofit
• Dave Bishop, Owner, PrairiErth Farm (Atlanta, Illinois)
• David LeZaks, Senior Fellow, Croatan Institute
• Erin Meyer, Executive Director, Basil’s Harvest nonprofit
• Japhia Ramkumar, MD, Internist, UICOM, Urbana Champaign (UIUC COM)
After each presents on their own work, there will be a lively discussion on how they all work together... and how we can best amp up these interactions.
Full disclosure: I am proud to be a member of the ReGenerate Illinois Leadership Council and I will be co-moderating this webinar.
