Big Cup of Local
This pretty smoothie is so local. Strawberries, apricots, raspberries, red sweet cherries and Rainier cherries purchased from local farms. Splashes of strawberry and rhubarb shrubs made from local produce and home-made. Even the kefir is from Lifeway, a local company.
OK, there is also a banana. I keep asking our local vendors if they are growing them and they look at me like I’m bananas. Gotta go to the grocery store for some things.
Delicious, super-healthy and virtuous.
We Need The Rain and Farmers Need You
Guess we can stop talking about a drought for a while. The region definitely needs rain because of the exceptionally dry spring. But as our friend Tracey Vowell of Three Sisters Garden in Kankakee wrote in the June 8 issue, we don’t want to get it all at once.
Nonetheless, the dozens of farmers markets in the weekend schedule below are rain or shine. We’d all rather go to the outdoor markets when it’s sunny and beautiful, but weekends like this are when the farmers need you most.
There are going to be lots of rainy spells but the forecasts also show some breaks in the action. So put on your yellow slicker and boots, dart out, and make sure the farmers don’t have to put all that beautiful food back on the truck. There will even be puddles for you to splash in .
Amen, Bob. Thanks for today's story about the weather.
