Roaring Into June With Chicago’s New Baby Lion
It was a beautiful final Saturday in May, with sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s. And I had an outing to fit the day.
First I stopped by North Pond Bird Sanctuary and finally found a couple of broods of goslings, along with a very colorful duck that appears to be a green-winged teal. Then I went to Lincoln Park Zoo where members got to get a first glimpse of Pilipili (the Swahili word for pepper), the lion cub that was born on March 15. On the way out I got some pix of the herons that nest in the trees just inside the zoo’s boundaries.
After that it was the short walk to a crowded and buzzing Green City Market. Later in the morning I popped in for my first visit of the year to Division Street City Market. Finally, Barb and I walked over near Belmont Harbor and chilled by the lake for a while.
I’ll have photos of the geese, herons and markets tomorrow, but today belongs to the perfect little lion, with more photos after this brief commercial message.
Local Food Forum on Mike Nowak’s Show Sunday
I will be appearing Sunday during the 10 a.m. central hour on the online Mike Nowak Show with Peggy Malecki. We’ll be talking about the increasing amount of stuff that is in season, the city of Chicago’s Future of Food Summit this past week, what to expect from USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack’s Food System Transformation announcement Wednesday, and baby animals of course.
You can catch the show (which starts at 9 a.m.) on The Mike Nowak Show’s website or its YouTube channel. Tune in for what I’m sure will be an informative and breezy conversation.
Coolio!
