Outdoor Market Weather on Indoor Market Day
A warm rebound made for a delightful trek to Green City's indoor market
Mother Nature, Hold This Thought for April
What’s right with this picture, taken at Green City Market’s busy indoor session today (Saturday, March 2)? As you can see, it was pretty much a no-parka zone, as the bounce back to warmer temperatures after a couple of cold days meant no excuses for not going across town to visit friends and buy stuff.
Time flies, and Green City — widely regarded as the region’s most prominent farmers market — opens its outdoor season on April 6, just five weeks away. It will be the third consecutive year in which Green City kicks off the overall regional outdoor market season on the first Saturday in April.
Will it be as pleasant as today for the outdoor kickoff? Who knows. It’s Chicago.
In the meantime, Green City Market has three more indoor sessions through March 23 at 3031 N. Rockwell St. in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood. They then take a week off to prepare for the outdoor opening.
My market haul: Carrots from Tomato Mountain (Brooklyn, Wisconsin); onions from Jacobson Family Farms (Antioch, Illinois); winter spinach and radishes from Nichols Farm and Orchard (Marengo, Illinois); two tofu salads and fresh tofu from Phoenix Bean Tofu (Chicago); and cremini mushrooms from River Valley Ranch (Burlington, Wisconsin).
