Seasonal Top Billing for Another Week
Ramps, those legendary wild onions, arrived at Green City Market last week in their usual role as the first crop to market each year. And while a spectacular spike in temperature today (April 23) enabled folks to go from coats to cutoffs, the overall chilly start to spring has held other early crops back, giving ramps another week of top billing.
That may change soon. My friends at the Mick Klug Farm (St. Joseph, Michigan) stand told me that there’s a pretty good chance of seeing the first asparagus next week. The weather forecast for the week ahead is for much cooler temperatures and some rain, which people may not like as much but asparagus does.
I may have splurged a little on today’s market haul:
Clockwise from lower right are sweet potatoes from Jacobson Family Farms (Antioch, Illinois), pretzel bagels from Flat & Point (Chicago), Coppa pork shoulder steak from Avrom Farm (Ripon, Wisconsin), lemon balm from Smits Farms (Chicago Heights, Illinois), “tiny” apples (four for $1) from Ellis Family Farms (Benton Harbor, Michigan), ramps from Mick Klug Farm, Molina tortillas (Sawyer. Michigan), lettuce from Nichols Farm and Orchard (Marengo, Illinois), and golden oyster mushrooms from Primordia Foods (Bloomington, Illinois).
Enjoy these scenes from today’s market, including Dogs of the Farmers Market of course.
