Incidental Birding
I don’t get down to North Pond in Lincoln Park often enough, but the Sunday weather was beautiful and I needed a break. Timing is everything, and I was fortunate enough to see this beauty fishing for its dinner.
Scroll down to see more photos of this lovely bird and one of its smaller cousins.
Lombard’s Prairie Food Co-op Seeks Vendors
Prairie Food Co-op is one of a cluster of community co-ops in the Chicago region that — after years of development, fundraising and site selection issues — are planning to open over the next year. And Prairie, which is being built out in a shopping center in the western Chicago suburb of Lombard, is seeking applications from businesses that would like to sell their products there when the store opens.
Co-ops tend to be eager to feature locally produced vegetables, fruit, meats, eggs and other natural products. If you are one of these local producers, this sounds like a great opportunity to get shelf space at one of the next big things in local food retailing.

Steve and Charlotte’s Logan Square Market Haul
Here’s another beautiful market haul still life, this one shared by Steve Zahn and Charlotte Isles from their Sunday visit to Chicago’s Logan Square Farmers Market.
They are members in good standing in the Good Food community: Charlotte is development and communications coordinator at Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT), a leading animal welfare non-profit.
That is a whole lot of delicious, healthy, sustainably produced food there. As Steve relates, even their cat Mittens got into the act, as the green stuff in the upper left hand corner is cat grass.
Ingredients from this market run and another to the Lincoln Square Farmers Market last Thursday made their way into the couple’s beautiful Sunday brunch in the photo above.
OK, folks, sharing is caring… please send photos of your own local food adventures and I’ll share them with the world.
More Birdland
It isn’t too surprising to find beautiful birds like these at Chicago’s North Pond, as it is a designated bird sanctuary. Still, it’s pretty lucky to see not one but two herons during a visit.
