What’s New?
I took a morning dash to the SOAR Farmers Market in downtown Chicago. Alas, no corn yet for Streeterville. But there were a few things that are either brand new in season or had previously made just cameo appearances.
Sacred Serve & Prevail: Local Startups Get Press
During my seven years with FamilyFarmed I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Good Food startups producing better-for-people, better-for-the-planet food that was also delicious. Two of them got some national limelight recently.
Sacred Serve, which makes super-creamy plant-based gelato with superfood ingredients, was featured Friday (July 2) on NBC’s The Today Show. The segment featured an interview with founder/CEO Kailey Donewald, who explained how her conversion to a plant-based diet healed her longterm health issues and led her to create her yummy and health-conscious frozen desserts.
Bonus: Sacred Serve’s pint containers are 100 percent recyclable (a rarity in the ice cream case).
Prevail has taken the concept of beef jerky up a few notches. Its products are made from grass-fed beef in a variety of flavors. They have a softer texture than typical leathery jerky products, and they are free of the eight most frequent allergens (like Kailey Donewald of Sacred Serve, founders Glen and Ashley Kohn created their original version in their kitchen to help deal with food allergies).
Good Housekeeping’s Nutrition Lab is certainly impressed, having named Prevail as a winner of one of its 2021 Healthy Snack Awards. Click the button to read more.
FYI, both Sacred Serve and Prevail are graduates of FamilyFarmed’s Good Food Accelerator program.
