Mint Creek Farm Events, Wild Trillium Farm CSA
Two of our local, sustainable farms share their news
Sunset Conquers the Clouds
The clouds forsaging the forecast nasty weather today filtered in Tuesday afternoon, but left enough room for the setting sun to beautifully illuminate the evening sky.
Meet Mint Creek Farm in Two Events (One Today!)
I have known the folks at Mint Creek Farm in Cabery, Illinois since 2014, when they participated in the first cohort of the Good Food Accelerator program launched by FamilyFarmed (the non-profit where I then worked). Since the early 1990s, the Carr family have been pioneers in organic livestock farming in our region, and I had the pleasure of visiting in October to report for a story about turkey farming I produced for the Buy Fresh Buy Local Illinois Directory.
So I am pleased to share the following events in which Mint Creek is involved, including the time-sensitive one immediately below.
TODAY at 1 p.m. central…
Illinois PIRG (Public Interest Research Group) presents “Stop the Overuse of Antibiotics,” a free webinar on one of our pressing food systems issue.
Raya Carr, Mint Creek Farm’s Events & Project Coordinator and Shepherdess, will be joined on the panel by Madeleine Kleven, Safe and Healthy Food Program Associate at Food Animal Concerns Trust (aka FACT); Dr. Sameer Patel, Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Director at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago; and Matthew Wellington, Public Health Campaigns Director at U.S. PIRG.
According to the organizers, “The majority of the medically important antibiotics sold in the U.S. go to produce meat, and they’re often used to compensate for industrial farming conditions, not to treat sick animals. That overuse breeds drug-resistant bacteria, otherwise known as ‘superbugs,’ that can sicken people with dangerous, sometimes life-threatening infections. Learn about state actions to stop antibiotic overuse in meat production so we can keep our life-saving medicines effective.”

And… you can reserve your place at Mint Creek’s April 29 Spring Farm Dinner + Tour, its first farm dinner of this year. The featured chef is Jason Qureshi of River Roast restaurant in downtown Chicago. Here are the details from the organizers, including how to sign up for their Meat CSA and receive a discount on the farm dinner.

The following is information about this year’s Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares at Wild Trillium Farm, a woman-owned farm entering its third year of production in Richmond, Illinois (north-central Illinois near the Wisconsin border).
Christine Johnson, who farms the land with longtime friends Katie Szymanski and Emmy May, is a leader in the Northern Illinois Young Farmers Coalition, which was mentioned in Monday’s Local Food Forum. Christine was also a contributor to the newsletter in 2021, writing about her experiences as a new farmer in Wild Trillium’s first year.
