It’s a tough job cutting up a 24-1/2 pound watermelon, like this one I had delivered by Three Sisters Garden (Kankakee, Illinois) last week. But someone has to do it.
I’m thinking of developing a video game around a hero who vanquishes gigantic fruit and vegetables, with his mighty chef knife named Excalibur and his fearless canine companion, Melancholy, by his side. I’m trying to figure out a heraldic name for my hero; it won’t be Benenson, because almost everyone misspells it.
Perhaps you’ve already figured out that my, um, offbeat sense of humor was shaped to some degree by watching Monty Python’s Flying Circus when I was a kid.
Anyway, in case you are wondering what a 24-1/2 pound watermelon looks like halved…
… and how many containers I filled up with the cut-up fruit.
I’ll have some useful ideas for how to deploy excessive amounts of watermelon in tomorrow’s Local Food Forum.
