Market's Days Dwindle Down to a Precious Few
Photos from the first October Green City, and the week's market schedule
Markets Showing Their Fall Flair
The display above at Smits Farms’ Green City Market stand on Saturday leaves no room for doubt that it is, in fact, autumn. The weekly market schedule still has quite a few entries, but by the end of the month, outdoor markets will be few and far between.
My modest market haul includes apples — Empire and Cox’s Orange Pippin, an ancient variety I love — from Nichols Farm and Orchard (Marengo, Illinois); sweet Italian sausage from Finn’s Ranch (Buchanan, Michigan); sweet potatoes from Frillman Farms (Prairie View, Illinois and Berrien Springs, Michigan); lemon balm from Smits Farms; and a whole chicken from Jake’s Country Meats (Cassopolis, Michigan).
The days of the outdoor market season may be dwindling, but the crowds at Green City Market have not.
Here’s the schedule for the week. Please pay a market visit and support our local farmers.
