The Link to Our Mike Nowak Show Appearance
I had a blast appearing on Sunday’s The Mike Nowak Show with Peggy Malecki, chatting with Mike, Peggy and Elsa Jacobson, the dynamo who manages the Lincoln Park, Lincoln Square and Uptown markets. It’s a fun convo… click below to get the recording.
This Week’s Chicago Metro Markets
(Click market name for website, and address for map; advance weather forecasts — subject to change, of course — from weather.com and accuweather.com for comparison)
As we reported in Sunday’s Local Food Forum, last week — the first full week of this year’s market season — was pretty chilly for early May. Below average temperatures are forecast to continue into this Tuesday, but then moderating in the more comfortably spring-like 60s.
Not much rain in the forecast: for farmers, that is good for selling at farmers markets, but not so much for the products they grow for you, as precipitation this spring is below normal.
Where might you run into the old hippie-looking Local Food Forum guy? I’m planning to be back at Lincoln Square Farmers Market on Tuesday; at Green City Market Wednesday morning and the Andersonville Farmers Market opening that afternoon; the Division Street Farmers Market — the kickoff for Chicago City Markets — and The Lincoln Park Farmers Market on Saturday; and Logan Square Farmers Market on Sunday (with maybe a swing by the Wicker Park Farmers Market if I’m feeling ambitious).
Can’t be everywhere though, so if you want to shout out your local market, please send photos to bob@localfoodforum.com and we’ll choose a selection for our roundup issue on Sunday.
Happy local fooding!

Lamb's quarters refers to:
a) An edible weed
b) An herb
c) A meat cut
d) A barn
Answer: a) Lamb’s quarters is a wild-growing weed that has edible leaves and seeds (it is related to quinoa) and is very nutritious. It can be prepared with or in place of greens such as spinach. The photo below is borrowed from Three Sisters Garden, which has lamb’s quarters and many other spring greens available for home delivery in Chicago this week.
