Logan Square Prepares for Big Sunday Crowds as Market Opens
Uptown Market's Debut is Another Highlight of Week's Chicago-Area Newbies
The most significant detail of this week's schedule of Chicago region farmers market is that your ability to find an open outdoor market is getting close to an everyday thing.
With multiple openings on Tuesday and Wednesday, the only days that the region is currently market-less are Monday and Friday... and those blanks will be filled as we move toward the big wave of June openings.
We love all the markets, but here are three highlights:
* Chicago's Green City Market and Uptown Farmers Market both open on Wednesday.
* Logan Square Farmers Market, one of the city’s most popular, debuts for the season on Sunday.
This Local Food Forum article has the day by day schedule of markets that are open (or opening) for the season, with a sneak preview of the next week’s openings.
Woodstock Market: Good Food Meets Groundhog Day Memorabilia
Farmers Market Reporter Shows Why You Should Go... But Don't Drive Angry!
Woodstock is a lovely little city of about 26,000 in far north-central Illinois. The seat of McHenry County, is it located in a region with a lot of small farms and sustainable agriculture. So it's not surprising that you should shop their Tuesday and Saturday outdoor farmer markets — or use that as an excuse for a field trip.
Another reason to go is that Woodstock is home to one of Illinois' most famous movie locations. The city filled in for Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania for the filming of the beloved comedy Groundhog Day, which stars Bill Murray.
This Local Food Forum article features photos from Saturday’s season opener in Woodstock, taken by Farmers Market Reporter Ed Kugler (who manages the Ravinia Farmers Market- Illinois in suburban Highland Park when he’s not visiting other markets).
I highly recommend a visit to Woodstock Farmers Market, one of my favorites. But borrowing a couple of famous lines from Groundhog Day, don’t drive angry… and watch that first step, it’s a doozy.
Webinar Reminder: Turning Peotone Airport Site into a Regenerative Center
Advocate Bob Heuer Explains His Plan Online This Thursday
Local Food Forum last Thursday published a contributed article by local food advocate Bob Heuer outlining his plan to permanently ditch a long-stymied but persistent proposal to build a third Chicago-area airport in Peotone — a farm community about 40 miles south of downtown Chicago — and replace it with a Regenerative Agriculture Research and Development Center.
This article has received an extraordinary amount of interest. So I’m sharing this reminder that this Thursday (May 8) at noon, Bob will be officially announcing his proposal, explaining why the airport plan should be dumped and why Peotone is a great location for the research center
