Learn About Just Food Initiative's Appeal
Plus, a link to kid-friendly recipes for the winter break
Hello, Stranger
We had a squall on Tuesday and it snowed furiously for a short time. It barely whitened the grassy surfaces before the temperature ticked up and it all went away. Still, it was briefly measurable, breaking the record-setting snow drought (this is the first year on record in which Chicago had no measurable snow before the Winter Solstice).
There are some snow showers predicted for late tonight, and current forecasts show potential for real sticking snow on Saturday (with wide variations in the amounts predicted, because this is Chicago).
I’m dreaming of a white New Year?
Your Donations Go Far With This Food Nonprofit
We have been sharing end-of-year fundraising appeals from nonprofits that do such great work promoting a better food system. Today we feature an ask from The Just Food Initiative of Fox Valley, a new friend of Local Food Forum, which is located in Chicago’s western suburbs. The content below was provided by The Just Food Initiative.
It’s December 29, so the minutes left in 2021 are ticking away. But if your nonprofit would like one more chance to ask for year-end donations, please email bob@localfoodforum.com with a 1-3 paragraph summary, a link to more information or a donation page, and a graphic (if you have one) promoting your campaign. Offer expires Friday, obviously.
[Note: This service is provided free to our amazing nonprofits, and is not paid advertising.]

The Just Food Food Initiative of the Fox Valley gives people a hand UP, rather than a hand OUT. Based in Batavia, Illinois, the 13-year-old nonprofit organization teaches individuals young and old how to grow their own food and how to preserve that food. It provides information on eating for health and choosing wisely from the supermarket.
Just Food supports local farmers who use organic practices, and it has been teaching Black youth how to grow their own produce and introducing them to careers that encompass agriculture. During COVID, Just Food provided nutrient-packed snacks to caregivers at two area senior homes, and it is planning to launch a one-of-a-kind farmers’ market in southeast Aurora, Illinois in 2022.
And it wants to do more.
End-of-year donations that Just Food receives will help the organization continue its current work, while also allowing it to launch other exciting community projects that advance food justice, such as the farmers’ market in southeast Aurora.
Supporters can send checks with unrestricted, tax-deductible donations of any size to:
