Just Roots CSA Pickup #2: Two Weeks Makes a Big Difference
Urban Farm is Greening Up Fast as the Growing Season Accelerates
Just Roots Chicago is an urban farming operation with growing spaces in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood and in the south suburb of Sauk Village. I recently started a subscription with their community-supported agriculture (CSA) program, because I support their mission to expand access to healthy, hyper-local produce to residents in surrounding communities who face food insecurity.
The bonus is that my on-site CSA pickups every other Saturday give me a window on what's growing at any particular time during the growing season.
The grounds were still pretty bare when I made my first pickup on May 10. But this time of year, a couple of weeks can make a big difference.
The photos in this Local Food Forum article about my May 24 visit to the farm prove this point. You'll also see the very generous produce haul that came home with me.
The article also has info about Just Roots' Farm Kickoff events at its Chicago location on June 7 and its farm in suburban Sauk Village on June 14.
