The Smell of Money Exposes Factory Farming
A reminder not to miss the Chicago showing of The Smell of Money, an important documentary about the devastation caused by factory farming of livestock… with inspiration about how rural communities have fought back.
The event will take place tomorrow (Saturday, April 20) from 4:30-6:30 p.m., at the Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave. in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. The movie screening will be followed by a panel discussion.
Local Food Forum has often written about the animal welfare activism of two Chicago region non-profits, Crate Free USA and Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT). Now the organizations have joined forces for the screening of The Smell of Money.
The film’s title refers to the nauseating odor of animal waste that emanates from factory farms — a.ka. Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, or CAFOs — which degrades the quality of life in the rural communities where they are located. This is just one of the critical problems involved with factory farming.

Regenerative Ag Rules in Common Ground Doc
I was on the scene last November when Naturally Chicago (for which I do contract work) was the proud host of the Chicago premiere of Common Ground, the 2023 documentary about the immense benefits of regenerative agriculture. I highly recommend it.
If you haven’t seen it yet, or would like to see it again, you’ll have multiple opportunities in our area on or around Earth Day on Monday (April 22).
There are two theaters in our area that are part of the official nationwide Common Ground event that includes more than 75 theaters across the nation on Monday.
In Chicago, there are two showings — at 2:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. — at AMC River East 21, 322 E. Illinois St., Chicago. Click here to purchase tickets. There will also be a 7:30 p.m. showing that day at the Classic Cinemas Tivoli in suburban Downers Grove; click here to purchase tickets at this location.
And if you’re booked and can't watch Common Ground that day… how about the day before? Because this important film is also getting five free showings around Chicagoland on Sunday, April 21 as part of the annual One Earth Film Festival. The showings will take place simultaneously beginning at 1:30 p.m. [Note: The showing at Three Brothers Theater in Waukegan is sold out.]
