Good Things: SNAP at Markets, Soil Health
Illinois Stewardship Alliance's Soil Health Week is March 4-10
Boosting Farmers Market Sales with SNAP and Outreach
A decade ago, there were relatively few farmers markets that accepted payment in the form of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Today, most markets do accept SNAP (in Illinois, the benefits are disbursed through the Link program).
SNAP is the lead focus of this week’s installment of the weekly series shared with Local Food Forum by University of Illinois Extension and UI Health as part of UI Extension’s Eat.Move.Save. program. The first page of the following entry explains the benefits to markets and eaters through SNAP’s expansion of Good Food access. The second page suggests other kinds of outreach and promotion that farmers market can use to increase foot traffic.
Dig In for Sustainability During Soil Health Week
Protecting and revitalizing the health of our nation’s soils is crucial to ensuring a sustainable food system for years to come. Soil health is the core principal of the increasingly adopted practices of regenerative agriculture.
Illinois Stewardship Alliance, in an annual program to increase awareness of this key issue, is presenting Illinois Soil Health Week from March 4 to March 10. And the organization has released its lineup of nearly two dozen virtual and live events that will take place during that week.
