Finn’s Ranch Meats: A Summer Favorite in Winter
As the Christmastime song “Let It Snow” goes, the weather outside is frightful. Whether you are in the outer suburbs digging out from a foot of snow — or where we are by the still-unseasonably warm lake, where we got enough to coat the lawns but no much more — your thoughts may turn to getting your delicious, locally produced food as conveniently as possible. Especially when we’re getting hit by one of the most severe polar vortex freezes since the big one 10 years ago.
So it’s timely that we present the latest in our series of outdoor farmers market vendors who are bringing their products either directly to your home or to drop sites scattered around Chicago metro.
Finn’s Ranch is our mobile vendor of the day. The name should be familiar to many of our region’s farmers market aficionados, as Finn’s Ranch sells at several markets in our area, and has a winter outpost in the weekly Green City Market Saturday indoor space in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood.
But to expand the reach of its pork, beef, chicken, eggs and regionally caught fish, Finn’s Ranch has created a home delivery program with a modest delivery fee of $10 (waived for orders of $200+). Or you may order and pick up for free at one of their 14 drop locations, eight in Chicago and six in the suburbs. Click here for a list of their pickup locations.
Click below to place your order by Mondays at 11:45 p.m. for delivery or pickup on Wednesdays.
Farming is challenging and full of risk, and the married couple of Sean and Alex Finn have had to overcome a terrible setback that occurred in June 2022: A fire at their Buchanan, Michigan farm destroyed important storage sheds.
While fortunately no people or animals lost their lives, the farm lost all of the inventory — half of their annual volume — that was stored in freezers that were located in the sheds that burned to the ground. They also lost all of the farm’s tools, vehicles and supplies were stored in those sheds.
Yet financial support from Green City Market and others in the generous local food community enabled the Finns to endure the setback, and the good news is that they are in the process of building back their storage facilities better than ever.
Sean and Alex are super-nice people and their products are delicious. And now it’s easier than ever to buy their food.
