Go To a Garden(eers) Party Saturday
Looking for a special experience this Saturday? Join Gardeneers — a nonprofit that builds and maintains school gardens in under-resourced Chicago communities on the South and West sides — for its inaugural “Garden Party” fundraiser.
The event, which takes place in Madison’s Garden at Smyth Elementary, 1059 W. 13th Street from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m., is a spin on the annual fundraising gala, one that underscores the organization’s extraordinary mission-driven work. According to Gardeneers…
Esteemed guests, sponsors and the Gardeneers community will be immersed into one of Gardeneers’ oldest garden sites in the heart of the city, surrounded by the Chicago skyline, while sipping beer and wine and snacking on select bites from local Chefs infused with food grown by the Gardeneers youth participants.
Gardeneers works with Chicago’s South and West side schools and communities to contribute positively to the larger food system. They do this by supporting youth in their school garden and farm programs to build their own knowledge, skills and habits to become leaders who care for themselves, their environment and their communities.
I had opportunities when I worked at FamilyFarmed to visit with Gardeneers at several of their projects (see photo above). I am so fond of their work that my wife and I donated our old car to the organization, which was able to put it to good use for a couple of years.
