A Hazy Shade of Winter to Ring in the Year
We have a straight-on view of Navy Pier from four miles north in Lakeview. So fireworks displays on clear nights provide nice photo opps.
Alas, New Year’s Eve was not one of those days. Winter so far has been mostly cloudy with occasional fog and, earlier on Sunday, some very light snow. The clouds lifted for a while early Sunday night, giving hope that we’d have a clear view of the New Year’s fireworks at midnight. False hope, though, as the haze settled back in.
The fireworks photos above are far from great. But they represent the event as it was.
So… Happy New Year!
Paid Subscription Fundraising Drive: Success x 3
If you’ve been a regular Local Food Forum reader, you know that I staged a month-long paid subscription drive that marked my 20th anniversary as a cancer survivor. As part of the campaign, I pledge to donate 20 percent of proceeds to Lurie Children’s Hospital to help them help children fight cancer.
On Sunday, I added up the proceeds, which amounted to $225. It was only when I went to the Lurie website to make the donation that I learned that there was a triple match going on courtesy of the Panda Express restaurants. As a result, that $225 turned into $675. To me, that’s some real money for a great cause.
Thanks so much to those new paid subscribers for their generosity. I am thrilled to have you as part of the Local Food Forum community.
Edible Chicago, a quarterly publication covering many aspects of our region’s food scene, was re-launched this past fall after a hiatus of several years. Congratulations to publisher Megan Marshall for bringing this valuable community platform back to life.
I’m happy to share that I contributed a little (and timely) piece about cold-weather cocktails for the Winter 2023/2024 issue. It focuses on Judson & Moore, the Chicago whiskey producer that is a rising star on the craft spirits scene. And it includes easy and tasty recipes for a hot toddy and a hot apple cider.
