Flowers and Fine Feathered Friends
As I mentioned in this morning’s official edition of Local Food Forum, I spent a lot of time by the lake on the two cloudless days this weekend. It was just perfect for taking pretty pictures and I don’t think it’s right to just keep them to myself.
Yes, I know this is a newsletter about food, but I suspect that many of you Good Food fans are also nature lovers. Please enjoy if you are.
As for the photo above, I thought we might be done with allium flowers when the first batch faded earlier this spring, but there was a new batch at the south end of Belmont Harbor. These plants are made up of hundreds of individual flowers that somehow grow into these perfectly circular greater whole. Just remarkable.
The Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool on Fullerton Parkway, near the Lincoln Park Zoo, is one of the prettiest and most serene spots in the city.
I had almost given up on my annual gosling search. It’s getting late in the year for goose babies and the North Pond bird sanctuary, where geese usually nest, is torn up for a major rehabilitation that will certainly serve Chicagoans well for many years to come but right now is a total mess.
Disappointed, I headed east on Fullerton to walk north home via the lakefront. But when I got to the Lincoln Park Lagoon, I found out where many of the geese had decamped. There were goslings, indeed, including these relative young’uns.
Older goslings, including some that have started taking on their adult coloration, were out with the adults for a swim.
Some of the sailboats taking part in a racing event at Navy Pier were visible at a distance in the sky-blue lake waters.

When I got back to Belmont Harbor, I was struck by a small grouping of trees with beautiful yellow flowers.
And after dinner, we were treated to this beautiful sky show at sunset, two days before the summer solstice.
