Lighting Up Chicago’s Sky on July 5
The big holiday weekend fireworks display was on July 5. I’ll explain below. But I figured this was an eye-catching way to start this newsletter.
Summer in Bloom During CSA Pickup at Just Roots Farm
I'm a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscriber with the Just Roots Chicago non-profit for two primary reasons.
I'd previously witnessed the beautiful vegetables on the tiny urban farm, so I relished the idea of getting delicious produce grown about nine miles from our apartment. I also respect their mission of helping increase access to that healthy and super-fresh produce for those facing food insecurity in the surrounding Bronzeville community on Chicago's South Side.
There is a third reason, though. When I make my every-other-Saturday pickups, I get to spend some Zen moments wandering around and taking photos of the lovely, thriving plants.
Sharing the pics from my Saturday (July 5) visit on Local Food Forum. Hopefully they'll give you a few Zen moments too and temporarily enable to forget that it's Monday.
True to the Pru: Farmers Market Reporter on a Downtown Newcomer
Ed Kugler's Photo Opp at the Tuesday Market on Chicago's Prudential Plaza
When local food veteran Ed Kugler isn't occupied as manager of the Ravinia Farmers Market in the north Chicago suburb of Highland Park, he's cruising the region to provide a window on other farmers markets.
His travels recently took him to one of the area's newer locations: the Pru Farmers Market, so named because it is open on Tuesdays (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) on downtown Chicago's Prudential Plaza. Come for the food, stay for a slice of the city’s architectural history.
Check out the story of the one-time jewel of Chicago's skyline, and enjoy Ed's market photos, in this Local Food Forum article.
Bob’s World and Welcome to It
Our 30th floor apartment on the lakeshore, four miles north of downtown Chicago, provides a straight-on view of Navy Pier — which means we get to see fireworks every Wednesday and Saturday from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Over the past few years, the big holiday fireworks display has only coincided on the 4th of July when it has fallen on one of those two days of the week. That wasn’t the case this year, as the 4th was on Friday. So Saturday the 5th it was.
Didn’t matter. I’ll take fireworks on whatever day or date.
A few more photos to mark the occasion:
Beautiful, thanks Bob.
