Everything Is Beautiful: A Market Video
Adding video content to go with my still-photography chops is a Local Food Forum priority, but it hasn’t happened quite yet. Fortunately I have talented friends such as Mark Dolnick, who produces the weekly Friends of Evanston Farmers Market newsletter.
Mark and his camera toured the Downtown Evanston Farmers Market last Saturday to capture lots of ready-for-their-closeup produce and prepared food, and created this lovely video below. It is definitely worth two minutes of your time, and you might want to keep it handy in case you’re having one of those days when you need a Zen moment.
Mark worked at the legendary Green Acres Farm stand until Brent Eccles and his wife Beth — beloved by Green City Market shoppers — decided this year to retire from full-time farming. Says Mark,
“I was a seller for Green Acres for quite some time after inheriting the job from my son. Their product and their kindness sort of spoiled me, which is why I am a retired produce monger.
“For the past few years I have written a newsletter for the Friends of Evanston Farmers Markets, a non-profit that has conducted chef demos and educational programs, and most prominently supports the Link Match program at the Evanston market with funds drawn from grants, businesses and many, many private citizens who step up every week.
“This year, freed from working at the market, I have been able to visit all the farmers and artisans, and jiminy, this market is already beautiful and overflowing. This short video was all shot at last week's market.”
As always, we’d be happy to receive and share your farmers market photos and videos. Send them to bob@localfoodforum.com with the location and how you want your photo credit to read.

Nonprofit Job Alerts
Editors note: We are doing a little re-concepting with our nonprofit news, events and job postings feature. Instead of saving them all up for a list on Fridays, we’re just going to publish them as we find out about them. These are need-to-know-now items, so it doesn’t make sense to hold them back.
Please remember that the royal “we” for Local Food Forum is me and Barb. We try our best to keep up with all of our nonprofit friends, but to ensure that your important nonprofit news gets in the newsletter, please send a flare to bob@localfoodforum.com.

Take a Quiz
When Green City Market was founded in 1998 it was located in:
a) Grant Park
b) a Soldier Field parking lot
c) the alley next to the Chicago Theater
d) the Merchandise Mart
Answer: c) Abby Mandel, a chef and food writer, created Green City Market to provide Chicago with a European-style market experience that emphasized sustainability. It initially opened in the alley next to the Chicago Theater on State Street. With support from leading chefs such as Rick Bayless, Paul Kahan and Sarah Stegner, Mandel moved the market to its now iconic location near the south end of Lincoln Park. She died at age 75 in 2008, during the market’s 10th anniversary year.
