Now That’s More Like It
We were rewarded for enduring the crappy weather on Friday and Saturday with a quite lovely Sunday. This snazzy view is from our apartment building’s 40th floor balcony, which just re-opened for the outdoor weather season.
Reminder: Fire-Damaged Geneva Lakes Farm Needs Support
ICYMI in Sunday’s Local Food Forum, Geneva Lakes Produce — a popular vendor at farmers markets including Logan Square and Evanston — suffered a fire last week that destroyed much of the equipment at its Burlington, Wisconsin farm. These good folks need financial assistance to begin recovery with their farmers market and CSA season just a month away.

Koval Hosting “New Beers Eve” on Thursday
I’m sharing word about a quite amazing beer, cider and whiskey tasting event that Koval Distillery is staging on Thursday evening (April 6) from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. It’s called “New Beers Eve” and is a celebration of the 90th anniversary of the end of Prohibition (now that’s something worth celebrating).
The bash will be held at Artifact Events, 4325 North Ravenswood in the area known as Malt Row because of its concentration of adult beverage makers. Artifact Events is located about a block north of Koval’s distillery and tasting room.
The lineup of leading craft producers is too long to list here. Click the button below to go to the Eventbrite page, where you can also buy tickets. It’s definitely going to be one of the biggest tasting bashes this year.
Binny’s Sustainable Wine Discussion 4/20
While doing some more pleasant research on the web this weekend, I stumbled on another beverage event that sounds spot-on for us better-for-people-better-for-the-planet imbibers.
Binny’s Beverage Depot is holding a sustainable wine discussion titled “A Walk on the Wild Side” at its flagship Lincoln Park store (1720 N. Marcey St.) on Thursday, April 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Binny’s describes the session as such:
Grape growers and winemakers are reinvesting in sustainability and making the biggest bang with the least impact. We’re excited to share this spring’s hottest releases in the Natural Wine World! Meats and cheeses to accompany in this walk-around tasting.

Farm Foundation’s Gala is June 15
The folks at Farm Foundation reached out and asked me to share word about their 90th Anniversary Gala (my, 1933 was a busy year), which will be held on Saturday, June 15 starting at 5:30 p.m. at Chicago’s historic Drake Hotel.
While the non-profit has a broad constituency across food and agriculture, it participates in many activities that affect our goals of food system sustainability. For example, Farm Foundation is a founding Board member at the Soil Health Institute, and recently created an Innovation and Education campus on the site of the historic Casey Farm in Libertyville, Illinois, purchased from Openlands, a leading environmental and sustainability organization.

Weep No More
I took advantage of the pleasant Sunday weather to take a walk along Lake Michigan. This yellow-flowering willow is always one of the first trees in the area to bloom in the spring. A welcome sight in an early spring that still can alternate between May to January within a matter of hours.
