Redefining “Balanced Diet?”
I usually spend a good deal of time on weekends doing food prep for the week. And sometimes — like Sunday, when I made two large pots of soups (chicken vegetable and a what’s-in-the-fridge sorta minestrone) and roasted two pans of chicken thighs at the same time — the drainer in our apartment kitchen gets a little out of control.

Dom’s Kitchen and Market Big News Coming Soon
This afternoon, I visited Dom’s Kitchen & Market in Lincoln Park (2730 N. Halsted St.) to interview company Chairman Jay Owen about learnings from the flagship store’s first six months. In the course of our chat, I learned that Dom’s will soon be making its anticipated announcement of the location of its second store, with a planned early 2022 opening.
Having spent decades as a journalist, I know how abused the term “Breaking News” is, so I won’t go there. But given that Dom’s destination-store combo — Good Food grocery store, food court and high-class convenience store — has been one of THE food marketing stories this year, we will bring you word of Store #2 as soon as it becomes available.
Reminder to Farmers: Big Signups Wednesday
Just a reminder to farmer friends that this Wednesday (December 15) brings an application deadline for an awesome farmer training program and the kickoff of applications for an equally awesome grants program.
You have until that date to apply for Stateline Farm Beginnings, a training program led by Angelic Organics Learning Center.
Also that date, applications open for Resilience Fund Grants for Illinois Local Food Producers — managed by Illinois Stewardship Alliance with financial support from the Chicago Region Food System Fund — which will award a total of $175,000 to farmers for critical infrastructure needs.
