Snowball Throwing, That’s What I’ll Do
Got some more of this. Since overnight we’ve had a series of lake effect snow showers. It’s pretty rare; our usual winter systems are Alberta Clippers that speed over us, dropping an inch or two, then racing east, sucking up that Lake Michigan water, then dumping a foot of snow in places like Grand Rapids and South Bend.
We seldom get any here in Lakeview (though for some reason, for which I’ve never heard an explanation, the folks in Evanston about 10 miles north get frequent lake effect hits).
I’ve been a weather junkie since I was little — I might have grown up to be a meteorologist except for the fact that I sucked at math and science — and lake effect snow has been a particular fascination.
BTW, the headline is a lyric from a well-known song featured in one of the most popular movies ever. You might have watched it last month. Be the first with the correct answer in the comments and I’ll give you a shout out as a person who shares my exquisite taste in musicals.
Local Food Forum is taking a weekend break. Stay in, stay safe on those slick streets if you have to go out, and get some rest.
Phoenix Bean Tofu Lunar New Year Event Sunday
Here’s some light fun for you this Sunday (1/30). Visit the Mariano’s store in the South Loop (1615 S. Clark St.) between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and celebrate Lunar New Year with Jenny Yang of Phoenix Bean Tofu — and a special lion dance performance from the Chicago Chinese Cultural Institute!
I’ve known Jenny since 2014, when she was in the first cohort of the Good Food Accelerator at FamilyFarmed (where I then worked). She is one of the nicest people I know, and her tofu, made from organic Illinois soybeans, is exceptionally delicious. Phoenix Bean also sells under the Jenny’s Tofu brand.
The event is free but requires a ticket; click the button below to register.
Frontera Seeks Experienced Market Gardener
Attention experienced market gardeners: the Frontera Restaurant Group wants you. Frontera Grill and its sister restaurants are in search of one of you to run their production garden.
Hmmm… grow produce to be served to Frontera’s customers. Sounds like a cool gig. And the bonus, of course, is that you get to work for Chef Rick Bayless, one of the foremost supporters of our local farmers since he opened Frontera Grill 35 years ago.
Details from Frontera are below.
_______________
We are looking for an experienced market gardener to run the production garden for Frontera Grill (and its sister restaurants). Must be experienced in organic production and harvesting of food crops as well as composting. Basic handyman skills are necessary. A knowledge of microgreen production and bee keeping is a plus. We are looking for someone who presents well and is neat, self-motivated, hard-working and dependable. Hours can be flexible. Resumes to Jen Fite at jfite@fronteragrill.net.
