Good Food Generosity
Those friendly folks above at the opening of Green City Market’s indoor winter location last Saturday are Executive Director Mandy Moody (right) and Operations Manager Taylor Choy. And they are asking you to support their end-of-year fundraising drive.
Their details — with a focus on how the market helps people who face food insecurity — are below. And if you want to learn more about Green City, pop into their indoor market tomorrow between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. It is located in the Avondale neighborhood at 3031 N. Rockwell St. (The full weekend farmers market schedule is below).
_______________
After two consecutive winter market seasons put on hold due to the pandemic, Green City Market will bring back our Winter Market. But we’re depending on your support to do it.
Operating Green City Market through the winter is a game-changer for the dozens of local, sustainable farmers and food businesses that depend on direct-to-consumer sales at our markets. It also means that the thousands of Chicagoans who rely on Green City Market’s food access programs can continue to access nutrition assistance uninterrupted through the winter.
Local food lover, your support is critical to making this work possible — please, donate today to provide urgent hunger relief for neighbors in need.
Nearly three years into the pandemic, a hunger crisis persists in our communities. 1 in 7 households overall and 1 in 5 households with children experienced food insecurity in 2022 in Cook County. That’s up from the 1 in 10 households who found it difficult to afford food in 2020.
Your donation today will provide Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) matching benefits through our flagship food access program, GCM For All. Your gift directly maximizes the purchasing power of Chicagoans facing food insecurity while also providing a marketplace for local, sustainable growers to thrive.
Plus, when you donate today, your contribution will be doubled up to $55,000 thanks to the Alvin H. Baum Family Fund!
Talking About an Urban Farm with a Teaching Mission
The Talking Farm, located just a bit over the Chicago city line in Skokie, practices and teaches about sustainable urban agriculture. Read their pitch below and consider donating to support and advance their great work. And to learn more, check out my story about The Talking Farm published July 17 in Local Food Forum.
During COVID-19, the community turned to us to provide them with safe and nutritious alternatives to conventional food sources. In these uncertain times, having a source for local food matters. By sustainably sourcing your food, you are avoiding food sources that rely on harmful practices that exploit the environment and labor, and that truck — or fly — food from thousands of miles away. Our mission to sustainably produce food using healthy soil practices, water conservation, and integrative pest management is a vital example and resource for our community.
If you would like to help us grow, please donate today — we need your help.
Your donation ensures:
An ongoing, safe, nutritious and environmentally sustainable source of local food
A local source of information, learning and innovation in small-scale urban farming that is passed through to the community through internships, volunteer days and educational programs, including our annual organic seedling sale that supports home edible gardening
Your part in a local food system that centers our environment, health and community
Donations of produce to local food pantries and communities in need
We need your help to continue growing.
Will you help us grow by making a tax-deductible donation today? Please give as generously as you can.
