Scenes From This Week’s Markets
The Chicago region farmers market season officially kicked off a weekend ago, on Saturday, May 1, and the temperature soared that day to 83. You might have said, “Wow, spring has taken hold and the cold days are over.” To which we might have said, “Lived here long?”
We live in the land of “if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes,” and sure enough by the Tuesday markets, it’s was misty and chilly. There were some sunny days later in the week but the highs had a hard time cracking 50.
Nonetheless, the fact that the market season started on time — last year there was a seven-week delay caused by COVID — prompted local food fans to take to our markets with enthusiasm, reusable totes and outerwear.
The forecasts starting this Tuesday are much more spring-like. But it’s Chicago, so make sure to check before you head out.
Here are scenes from Local Food Forum’s market visits (including the photo at the top of Downtown Evanston Farmers Market):

Take a Quiz
Since Mother’s Day is May 9, what should you be fixing for Mom today, according to Foodimentary, a website that tracks national food days?
a) Buttermilk biscuits
b) Apple pie
c) Shrimp
d) Chocolate chip cookies
Answer: c) Today is National Shrimp Day, so get some and make it scampi. Luckily, Local Food Forum wasn’t around for Mother’s Day last year when it was May 10 — National Liver and Onions Day. If you guessed one of the other answers, you weren’t far off. National Apple Pie Day is May 13, Buttermilk Biscuit Day is May 14 and Chocolate Chip Day is May 15.
