More Markets
We have learned about a couple more farmers market that are produced by individual organizations, and will be adding them to the Market Monday list:
Vegan Paradise, which bills itself as Chicago’s first vegan farmers market, takes place on most Sundays through October 31 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Plant Chicago, the holistic sustainable food business incubator located at 1400 W. 46th St. Vegan Paradise is a joint project of Chicago’s Vegan Test Kitchen and Bubbly Dynamics, Plant Chicago’s parent company.
Growing Home opens its Thursday market season on May 13 at its Wood Street Farm. The market will take place at 5814 S. Wood St. on Thursdays from noon to 6 p.m. Growing Home is a South Side Chicago nonprofit that produces tons of organic produce each year on a little more than an acre while providing jobs, training and placement for individuals with employability issues.
Take a Quiz
Plant Chicago, noted above as the host for the Vegan Paradise farmers market, is an incubator for sustainability-focused food companies. Its building formerly served as a factory producing what products?
a) cured meats
b) auto parts
c) candy
d) sheet metal
Answer: a) Plant Chicago is located in a building that long produced ham and corned beef. This isn’t surprising given that the factory is located in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood, which was adjacent to the Chicago Stockyards prior to its closure in 1971 after more than a century in operation.
Can't wait for the market season!!!
I'll see you at Division Street on Saturday the 15th. I confess that when Daley Plaza opens on the 27th, I may get a little teary-eyed.
