Autumn in Earnest But Still Mostly Green
A Wednesday visit to Green City Market, the weekend schedule, and Hobbes' World
Summer’s Over? Don’t Tell the Zucchini
October is almost half over, but some of those summer crops are hanging in there. My haul from a quick early Wednesday morning visit to Green City Market, mostly from Nichols Farm and Orchard (Marengo, Illinois), included zucchini and green peppers along with carrots (with greens), lettuce, cippolini and red onions, and scallions.
Also, white grapes from Mick Klug Farm (St. Joseph, Michigan) and, from Phoenix Bean (Chicago), tofu scramble and tofu dip.
There was a little more fall color, but it’s still mostly green out there. Which is fine. Why rush?
This Weekend’s Regional Market Schedule
The sun will come out… eventually. We’ve been fairly lucky with market day weather for most of the outdoor season, but this weekend sounds unpleasant, as in cool and rainy.
Which means it’s lecture time. Except in the most extreme conditions, farmers markets are rain or shine. That means the rainy days, when a lot of people shun going out, are the days when our farmer-vendors need us most. So please watch the weather radar for breaks, put on your Wellies, and help our local farmers while buying all that beautiful, healthy, sustainably produced local food..

Hobbes’ World, and Welcome to It
Recently, I started compiling my non-food photos, nature and otherwise, at the bottom of the newsletter under the headline “Bob’s World, and Welcome to It.” Well, our cat Hobbes got jealous, and so once a week, we’re going to share Hobbes’ World too.
How’s this for a cool cat? Our apartment building management swapped out our old malfunctioning refrigerator for a new, much better one on Tuesday (you know you have a lemon of a refrigerator when it can’t keep ice cream frozen). We were loading up the new unit and turned our backs for a second, and for a big cat, Hobbes can be pretty stealthy.
Don’t worry, no defrosting chickens were harmed in the making of this photograph.
This really isn’t anything new for Hobbes, as he came around to explore the old fridge almost any time we had the door open.
Even without appliances, Hobbes can be a pretty chill dude. This happens to be one of his favorite positions. It doesn’t look especially comfortable to me, but then again, I’m not a cat.
Then sometimes he’s all business, making like my feline overlord while I’m working in my sort-of office in the corner of the living room.
I have had much worse bosses.
Trust me on that.
