Weren’t We Expecting a Lamb?
The old saying that March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb may be true sometimes, but not this year. Preceded by a threat of strong storms this afternoon and evening, Saturday’s weather for the outdoor farmers market season kickoff sounds… rather leonine.
Here are the Saturday forecasts from some weather sites:
Weather.com: Showers in the morning then continued cloudy and windy in the afternoon. High 41F. Winds NW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of rain 40%. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.
Accuweather: A couple of rain or snow showers in the morning; otherwise, cloudy, windy and cooler, high 43.
WGN Weather: Mostly cloudy, very windy and colder. Some rain or possible mixed rain and snow showers. Wind gusts topping 50 mph at times. High 44 but falling into the mid to upper 30s.
OK, we all know staging outdoor events on April 1 is a roll of the dice (there must be a reason they call it “craps”). But hey, we’re weather warriors here in Chicago, amIrite? And remember that while you’ll be able to make a quick-hit visit to grab some delicious local food, the vendors will be out there for hours freezing their tushes.
So if you can, please pop into Green City Market in Lincoln Park from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. or the Logan Square Pop-Up Market in Solidarity Triangle from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Or if you don’t feel like chilling out, click the button below for a reminder in yesterday’s Local Food Forum of the indoor markets that are still open.
Subscription Drive Fundraiser Runs Through April
Thursday’s issue of Local Food Forum also announced that to mark Local Food Forum’s 2nd anniversary Saturday, I am staging a campaign in which I will donate a portion of every new paid subscription to Illinois Farmers Market Association.
What I failed to make clear is that the drive runs through the whole month of April. I will donate 10% of every new $50 subscription made by April 30 to ILFMA, and 20% of every new $100 founders’ subscription.
Thanks to the new paid subscribers who jumped right in, as well as the new free subscribers. Local Food Forum is all about building community, and your subscriptions help.
