Apply Now for Green City's Associate Board
Shake off the morning fog with this week's much-trimmed market schedule
Ooh, Spooky!
Just in time for Halloween… a thick blanket of fog by the lakeshore.
Carl Sandburg wrote that fog slips in,
On little cat feet.
But right now I can’t,
Even see the street.
Halloween was never a big thing with me, even when I was a kid (I’ve mentioned that I was an odd little kid). But have fun if you’re celebrating.
And if you end up with an excess of dark chocolate, please reach out to me. I can help.

A Market Two-fer in Lincoln Park
Speaking of Green City Market… The weather on Saturday was as beautiful as it gets on October 29, so I made stops at two great farmers markets just a few blocks apart in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.
One of them was Green City Market (of course). As you can see in the above photo, the big crowds drawn to what is often referred to as Chicago’s premier farmers market have hardly diminished since the summer “peak” season.
Green City’s Lincoln Park flagship and its satellite market in West Loop will continue outdoors through Saturday, November 19 (that’s the weekend before Thanksgiving), though the Wednesday Lincoln Park market wrapped up last week. Then, after taking the holiday weekend off, Green City Market will move to its new indoor location in the Avondale neighborhood beginning on Saturday, December 3.
The Lincoln Park Farmers Market, which is winding down its 41st season, is located a short distance west on Armitage Avenue. Despite the challenge of being so close to a major market like Green City (and running simultaneously on Saturdays), the Lincoln Park market is thriving as well.
Much credit for this goes to Elsa Jacobson, the market manager (and a longtime friend). Just about every square inch of space is filled with vendors’ tents and tables, and there is more than enough variety to fill your fridge for the week. The market has even recently added live music to the neighborhood feel.
The Lincoln Park Farmers Market will also be open through Saturday, November 19 before calling it a year.
My market haul included two items from The Lincoln Park Farmers Market on the left: sour pickles from Pickled Prince (Chicago) and a soft pretzel (one of my weaknesses) from pHlour Bakery (Chicago). And from Green City Market, zucchini and carrots (orange and rainbow) from Frillman Farms (Prairie View, Illinois and Berrien Springs, Michigan); cremini mushrooms from River Valley Ranch (Burlington, Wisconsin); shallots from Froggy Meadow Farm (Beloit, Wisconsin); and two pork steaks and some bacon ends from Jake’s Country Meats (Cassopolis, Michigan).
I stocked up a bit on the meat because this was Jake’s last market day of the season. They are, however, doing monthly meat drops; click here to learn more.
