A Friendly Subscriber's Market Haul
Plus, a composting company goes co-op, and this week's market schedule
Share Your Market Haul with the World (Janice Did!)
Janice Neitzel, a Chicago resident and friend through work, is founder and president of Sustainable Solutions Group, where she consults with food companies to measure and improve farm animal welfare in their supply chains. She also is a big fan of farmers markets, and I’m thankfully sharing her photos from her visit Saturday to the South Loop Market at Printers Row.
Can you tell that Janice really likes all that super-fresh, delicious, nutritious, sustainably produced food she finds at her local markets?
And bonus points for biking to and from the market and leaving no carbon footprint.
Seriously, folks, even I don’t want to see what I’m doing all the time, so I’d love it if you would be like Janice and share photos from your favorite farmers markets and (if you like) what you bought there. Publication is guaranteed.
Scroll down to see this week’s farmers market schedule so you can plan your visits. But first, some news…
Collective Resource Becomes Compost Co-op
Collective Resource, started by Evanston resident Erlene Howard in 2008, was one of the earliest companies doing home pickups of residential waste for composting. And at the beginning of this month, Collective Resource took another big step in its service to the Chicago region by converting to a cooperative model.
From the company’s website:
Collective Resource Compost Cooperative. It has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? Beginning July 1st, 2023, we became a hybrid co-op: both worker- and consumer-owned. It’s the next logical step in the life of the company that employees be able to own part of it. Our business model is based on community, and how we want to work in the world is communally, not competitively.
We’ll still be dependably providing our customized, container-swap composting service. Becoming a co-op means we’ll have financial support from the community to ensure that we can continue helping Chicagoland combat climate change.
You can support us even if you’re not a customer by buying supporter-owner shares.
Congratulations to Collective Resource for this new development in its values-driven work.
This Week’s Regional Farmers Market Schedule
Hey, heads up… Farmers Market Week, an annual national celebration of farmers markets’ contributions to our communities, begins this coming Sunday… the last day on this weekly schedule. Of course, every week is farmers market week at Local Food Forum.
Thank you so much, Michele!
Hi Bob! Thank you so much for informing your readers about our big news, aka becoming a co-op. It’s fun for me, an employee of 12 years, to be an owner of Collective Resource Compost Cooperative!
